Dolphin Watching from Vilamoura

Six boats go looking for wild dolphins from Vilamoura Marina, from €28. Common and bottlenose dolphins live off this coast all year, so this is not a summer-only trip. The smaller custom boats give everyone a seat at the rail; the bigger combined trips pair the search with a run along the cliffs. Sea state matters more than season – flat water in the early morning makes the fins visible from much further off.

Good to know: Nobody can promise you dolphins. Read each operator’s policy on the booking page before you pay: some offer a free second trip if nothing is spotted, others do not, and that is the difference worth comparing.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get inside the Benagil Cave on a trip from Vilamoura?

No. Since 2024 motorised boats must stay 15 metres clear of the cave arches and may not enter. Only licensed guided kayak and SUP tours go inside, and none of them depart from Vilamoura – they start from the beaches at Benagil and Carvoeiro, 35 to 45 minutes west by road. A boat trip from here shows you the cave from the water and the coastline on the way; if being inside is the point, drive over and book the kayak there.

Is Vilamoura a good starting point for the Benagil caves?

Honestly: it is not the best one. Portimão, Carvoeiro and Albufeira all lie closer, so their trips are shorter and usually cheaper. What Vilamoura gives you instead is the stretch of coast in between – the orange cliffs of Praia da Falésia and Olhos de Água – and the option to combine the caves with a dolphin search in one 2.5-hour trip. If you are staying here, that trade is usually worth it. If you are choosing a base purely for Benagil, stay further west.

Will we really see dolphins?

Common and bottlenose dolphins live off this coast all year, and sightings happen on most trips – but these are wild animals and nobody can guarantee them. Early departures usually mean flatter water, which makes fins visible from much further away. Operators differ in what they offer if you see nothing: some give you a second trip free, others do not. That policy is on the booking page and is worth comparing before you pay.

Can I book a round of golf here?

Not through this site. Vilamoura is one of Portugal’s best-known golf destinations – the Victoria course hosts the Portugal Masters – but green fees are not sold on the booking platforms we compare. Exactly two golf-related things are bookable here, and both are family adventure parks rather than courses. For a tee time, book directly with the course or through your hotel.

How far in advance should I book?

In July and August the popular morning departures sell out one to three days ahead, and the private charters go earlier than that. Outside high season, booking the evening before is usually fine. Since almost every trip can be cancelled free up to 24 hours ahead, booking early costs you nothing.

Are the tours suitable for children?

The catamarans and the larger dolphin boats take children of any age and carry child-size life jackets. Speedboats and jet boats set their own minimum ages, and the parasailing operators set a minimum weight. Those limits differ from operator to operator and are stated on each booking page – check them there rather than assuming, because we cannot list a limit that an operator may change.
