Private catamaran from Vilamoura: when does €900 make sense?
Updated September 12, 2026 · 5 min read
Dividing a charter price by the boat’s maximum capacity can make almost any private trip look inexpensive. The useful calculation divides by the people who will actually pay. Vilamoura’s Algarve Half-Day Private Catamaran Charter, activity 673914, is listed at €900 per group of up to 18 in the catalogue dated 12 September 2026. For six friends that is €150 each, not €50.
The feed lists three hours and five stars from 11 reviews. That is a small review sample, and the price is a starting figure for the whole group. Before collecting contributions, obtain a quote for your date, your passenger list and the particular duration. A private boat is attractive when exclusivity has value to you, not simply because a large divisor produces a small number.
The passenger count changes the calculation
The following amounts divide the €900 catalogue starting price evenly. They assume no extra charges and no difference in contributions between adults and children. They are arithmetic examples, not an operator’s group-discount schedule.
| Paying people | Cost each |
|---|---|
| 6 | €150 |
| 10 | €90 |
| 12 | €75 |
| 18 | €50 |
If 12 people agree to pay €75 and two withdraw, the remaining ten must cover €90 each unless somebody absorbs the difference. A per-group price does not fall automatically when your group becomes smaller. Make that arrangement explicit before friends send you money, particularly when one organiser is making the booking in their own name.
Children may count towards passenger capacity even when adults cover their shares. Ask the operator how it counts your actual party rather than using the number of bank transfers as the number of passengers. The 18-person label is the listed capacity limit for this product, not permission to add infants or non-paying friends on top.
It does not become cheaper than every shared boat
The catalogue also lists a shared Benagil catamaran trip from €45 per person for 3.5 hours. Eighteen tickets at that starting rate total €810, still €90 below the €900 private charter. Pure price equality would require 20 tickets at €45, exceeding this charter’s listed maximum of 18.
That calculation does not make the shared trip better. The routes, service and inclusions may differ, and exclusive use is a real benefit if the group wants it. It does show why a universal claim that private becomes cheaper for a big enough group is misleading. Compare the catamaran departures using the same date and the services you need, then decide what privacy is worth.
Select the duration before agreeing the programme
The current charter page offers three- and four-hour options, while our catalogue records three hours. Do not attach the €900 feed starting figure to the longer option without checking its price. Half-day is a product label, not a standard number of hours across every operator in the marina.
Tell the operator which matters more: time on the boat, a particular coastal destination or opportunities to enter the water. A private booking does not suspend weather limits or make every route possible within the reserved time. If Benagil is essential, request an explicit answer about that destination and the option being quoted, rather than assuming every Algarve charter reaches it.
Private does not mean every extra is included
The charter’s inclusion list includes crew and fuel; paddleboards and snorkelling equipment are on request. Confirm those requests before arrival. Having an activity mentioned on a page does not tell you how many people can use equipment simultaneously or how much time the programme allows for it.
Ask for the food and drinks arrangement in writing, including quantities and any dietary requirements. Do not turn a picture of a buffet into a promise for your booking. An organiser needs a total that matches the group’s expectations: a boat with snacks and a catered celebration are not interchangeable budgets.
Comfort needs answers for this particular boat
Ask about the actual seating, shade, toilet and boarding arrangement. Private use gives your group exclusivity; it does not establish accessibility or guarantee that every passenger can comfortably use every part of the boat. Describe mobility needs and ask the operator to confirm the arrangements before paying.
For children, minimum ages differ between operators and the booking page governs the selected product. Confirm child-sized life jackets and whether the proposed duration suits the youngest passenger. A group celebration can become an expensive afternoon if one family’s needs are treated as an afterthought. Medical questions about seasickness or sun protection belong with a pharmacist or paediatrician.
Agree who carries the cancellation risk
Read the exact cancellation terms before collecting money, then tell everyone what happens if they withdraw individually. Also establish what happens if the operator cancels or offers another date. Your agreement with friends and your booking contract are different arrangements; one does not automatically solve the other.
The private charter category is useful once you have a firm passenger count and a realistic total budget. Request confirmation of the date, option, inclusions and marina meeting point. Commit only when the amount each person will pay remains acceptable even if the group loses the participants most likely to cancel.
