Silves and Monchique in one day: the catch nobody mentions from Vilamoura

Updated September 16, 2026 · 7 min read

The red sandstone walls of Silves castle above the town

Ask anyone who knows the Algarve what to do on a day off the beach and you get the same two names: Silves, the Moorish capital of the region, and Monchique, the mountain range behind it. Both are genuinely worth a day. Neither is easy to reach from Vilamoura on an organised tour, and the reason is not distance — it is where the buses start.

The pick-up problem, stated plainly

The Silves and Monchique highlights tour is the most-reviewed option of its kind in this catalogue: €45 per person, four to five hours, 4.6 stars from 61 reviews, air-conditioned minivan, driver-guide, food and drinks included. Its own description begins “after getting picked up from your hotel or any meeting point in the Albufeira area”, and the inclusions repeat it: hotel pick-up and drop-off in the Albufeira area.

It is not an outlier. A 10-hour German-language day trip that takes in Silves, Lagos and Cabo de São Vicente at €81 per person lists five pick-up points: Portimão, Albufeira, Alvor, Praia da Rocha and Armação de Pêra. All five lie west of Vilamoura. A jeep tour of the Serra de Monchique with a picnic at €90 per person, four and a half hours, meets at the car park in front of the Fatacil entrance at Lagoa — you drive yourself there, and the guide waits by the jeep in a green shirt.

We are stating this rather than glossing over it because the alternative is a reader standing outside a Vilamoura hotel at eight in the morning waiting for a minibus that was never coming. The hinterland tours of the Algarve are organised from the western and central resorts. Vilamoura is east of all of them.

What you are going for

Silves was the capital of al-Gharb, and one of the booking pages calls the castle on its hilltop the grandest monument to Islamic rule in the region. The €45 tour lists the castle, the Roman bridge at the entrance to the town and Silves cathedral. It then continues to Monchique and up to Fóia — described on the booking page as the highest point in the Algarve region, at 902 metres.

Fóia is the point of the day for most people, and it is worth knowing what it is and is not. It is a summit reached by road, with a car park, masts and a view that on a clear day runs from the mountains to the sea. It is not a hike. If somebody in your group has imagined a walk in the mountains, the jeep tour is closer to that: its route takes in Caldas de Monchique, the thermal spa village, along with rural roads, photo stops and a picnic of local produce at the end.

The tour runs rain or shine, as its conditions state. In Monchique that is a real consideration — you are 902 metres up, and a low cloud base turns the viewpoint into a car park in fog. If the forecast inland is poor and your day is flexible, move it.

The three ways round the pick-up problem

Get yourself to Albufeira. A taxi or a hire car to an Albufeira meeting point puts the €45 tour back within reach, and the tour itself is four to five hours, so the day stays manageable. Ask the operator for the exact meeting point before you commit to a taxi time — “the Albufeira area” covers a lot of ground.

Drive the route yourself. Silves and Monchique are a straightforward day by car from Vilamoura, and you get Fóia at your own pace and the castle without a group. The trade is that somebody spends the day driving a mountain road and nobody gets the tasting of local sausages and spirits the guided tours build in.

Book a private tour. A private Monchique and Silves day trip is listed at €283 for a group of up to seven, seven hours, with hotel pick-up and drop-off, a stop at the Museum of the Centuries and a tasting of the region’s sausages and brandies. At seven people that is about €40 each, less than the German-language coach trip, and a private vehicle can collect from where you are staying. It carries no reviews yet, so confirm the pick-up area for Vilamoura in writing before booking, rather than assuming a private tour means anywhere.

Whether the inland day is worth it at all

Be honest with yourself about what the Algarve interior is. It is cork oak, eucalyptus, whitewashed villages and long views. It is quiet. It is not spectacular in the way the coast is spectacular, and after a fortnight of beaches some people find it the best day of the holiday while others spend it wishing they were back on the water.

If nobody in the party has asked for history, a day at sea will land better. The Benagil cave trips and the coastal run past Marinha and Algar Seco reach the postcard Algarve in two and a half hours from the marina and need no transfer to another town.

If you want inland without the logistics, there are two shorter options that do start near Vilamoura: the rock-salt mine at Loulé and the Quinta da Tôr winery, both a short drive inland and both under €30. The Saturday market at Loulé fits alongside either.

With children, weigh the four to five hours in a minivan carefully. The distances are the point of the trip and they are also the reason it does not work for everyone; our half-day argument applies to the hinterland more than anywhere. And whichever way you go, the price overview and the full list of excursions show what else the same money buys.
